Hermana Vance (MTC Companion)

Elder Fonseca

Sister LeMon (MTC District)
Hola,
So as some of might know already technology is becoming a large role in the Work of Salvation. The way this has played forth here in Santa Rosa is Facebook. For the last 3 months I have been using facebook as a missionary tool. Now I can teach anyone in the entire world, so I welcome any referrals that you have. I have seen it really be a tool that can touch people in different ways than knocking on doors.  I see so much potential in it. I still have a lot to learn but I am very excited! Now there is a way to reach all over the world!.
This week has been an amazing one.
.
Last Monday we had dinner with a member here in Davis. We weren't sure if it was going to happen but she gave the ok and we went. She told us after that she only had 10 dollars in her bank account and so wanted to feed us but needed her paycheck in order to do so. Well the paycheck came Monday morning.  She was able to feed us.  We were so grateful for her faith and willingness to sacrifice. Then we Had an amazing lesson with Ada. We haven't seen her in a few weeks and we had a member there and it was just very realistic and powerful!
.
Tuesdays have become one of our awesome but crazy days.  We always have so many lessons. First we had one with the Rodas. Specifically Brother Roda who is the only non-member which we have never had before. He told us that he is ready to be baptized because he feels like now is the perfect time. We are so excited and we are just helping them get married first! Then we had a new investigator named Greys. She is awesome and a referral from a member. She knows about God and Jesus Christ.  I really think we can build on that. She liked the idea of the Book of Mormon and said she would definitely read it so we will see in our next lesson. Then we had a lesson with the Toledos. We tried to commit them to a baptismal date but couldn't. They are very close to progressing as a family but now doesn't seem to be the time so we had to drop them. We have High hopes for them in the future!
.
Wednesday we went to Santa Rosa and had specialized training on using technology in this Work of Salvation. There really is so much potential and I am so excited! We had an impromptu lesson with one of our teenage contacts Brenda. She was asking a lot of the things we believe, so we went over the articles of faith. Before my mission I never realized how powerful and important those are to use and understand!
.
On Thursday I went on an exchange to Vacaville. It was kind of fun to go to this brand new place! In their area we taught Maria - a new investigator - about the Plan of Salvation which gave her peace because her son just passed away.  I hope that her potential as a progressing investigator continues to grow.  I went on facebook. We go on a few times a week to have contact with current investigators in our area, but now I am just trying to find those that would be interested in the Church via facebook. It is a new age of excitement. We are not on for very long, but it is fun to use it. The funny thing was that a man came into the church to use the bathroom while we were on the computers, so we "contacted" him.  He lives in Sacramento, out of our mission, so we added him on facebook! It is awesome to be open to all in the world! Then it was Hermana Santiago's Birthday, my temporary companion, and so we went out to dinner at Olive Garden!
.
On Friday we switched back and had our wonderful and essential weekly planning. It takes a long time but it is good. In the evening we had a lesson with Moises. It was awesome and we see so much potential in him. He wanted to come to church but he couldn't because of work. We hope to see him progress soon!
.
On Saturday We did more Facebook just trying to contact anyone and everyone we can! We send individual messages. Try and chat with people and now I am trying to teach others I know about the gospel via the internet. Later we taught Roberto, a newer investigator.  He was having trouble accepting the fact that he had to pray and act without God acting first. He thought that it could just be given to him!  We had an awesome lesson with our other Ada. She told us that she knew the Book of Mormon was true! I have never had someone say that! We were hoping she would show it by coming to church but she didn't.
.
We sadly had no investigators at church on Sunday.  It was still a good day. We had an extra long dinner at the Branch President's house and then had a short lesson with the Roda children. We see a lot of potential in them and we hope that we can help them to see it this week
.
Well, the work keeps moving forward. I have a testimony that the work is changing for missionaries and for the members.  Now is the time to catch the wave and give all the time you are physically able because without it we are not helping others to realize the potential that God has given his children here on the earth.
The Church is true. I find more of its truth everyday. This gospel is a journey that truly never ends and I know that I am happier progressing than standing still.  Be humble, teachable and open for what the Lord has in store for you because it will always be more than we can imagine! I love you all! I am so grateful to be doing the work in this age in time and you can too!
Love ya,
Hermana Cornwall

19 August 2013

 Hola!
Well hello again from the northern area of California! It has been another wonderful week doing the work of salvation full time! My week has been one of many miracles, as always, that never cease to amaze me!
I realized I forgot to talk about last Sunday, but to keep it short, we had another meeting with our Stake President (it is starting to become an every transfer thing) and he is so involved in the work. He cares about us and it is nice to have someone take care of us when our Mission President sometimes seems to be so far away. Our Stake has a wonderful focus on the work of salvation and I am glad to be a part of it. In the evening we had a little lesson with the Roda children, just talking about a chapter in the Book of Mormon. They are an awesome family and I am so glad we get to be with them and strengthen them so often.
.
Last Monday for p-day I finally got to play soccer again which was wonderful. It is definitely my de-stresser and it is fun to play the game I truly love. For dinner, a member took us out to a Mexican restaurant named Iguanas which was fun.  The funny thing was that we ordered in Spanish. I realized at that moment how grateful I was to still be in the US so that I didn't have to do that on a 24/7 basis. We went for a lesson with one of our younger teenagers named Bethany, but she thought it was the next week and she was hanging out with friends. We had some random contacts and it was good. Our evening kind of cleared up fast with people falling through so we just went to visit some people in our favorite trailer park. We talked to Jose who we wanted to pick up as an investigator.  He and his family are just super busy, so we still haven't.  It was nice to see him. We talked to Maria, one of his neighbors. We said a nice prayer with them. Then we talked to Viktor, a man who contacted us who wanted us to drive him home from an operation in Sacramento. He asked about our beliefs and it was nice to tell him the blessings from this church. Because of all of this outdoor fun I was attacked by the bugs. In two days of being outside and talking to people I got over 35 bug bites with 16 of them on one foot. It was a painful few days but there is no more itchiness now.
.
Tuesday was our first meeting as a new district. It was funny to have everything change but it was really great and fun to just be able to support one another in the individual work. We had a lesson with Martin and we committed him to a baptismal date! It was awesome!  His date is for the 14th of September and we are excited. We had a lesson with the kids of Gabriel and Maria because the parents were busy. We finished the 10 commandments from the week before and then the mother fed us enchiladas. They were AMAZING. I don't really know what was in them but they were sooooo good. The Mexican way to make enchiladas is you cover the tortilla in sauce (those small corn tortillas) and then cook it in a frying pan. Then while they are hot you fill them with cheese and/or meat and that is it. They were so delicious the bad thing was that then we went to our dinner. I was so full it was crazy.  But I made it through. Our next lesson fell through but we had this awesome contact with this little Asian family. Now that we have a missionary to speak to them we are excited. We had English class.  It was wonderful as always. It is so fun to teach them.
.
Wednesday we had a walking morning near our apartment to try and conserve miles.  It was great because we got our contacts really fast!  We had our dinner at 3:30 because the women that signed up was busy in the evening.  To get stuff done in Woodland we did our studies which turned out to be a tender mercy because we helped some other missionaries out just by being there! We had another chat with Pedro. I don't know if I mentioned him before, but he is a former investigator who knows the Bible.  He doesn't believe in organized religion, and thinks the end of the world is coming soon. He is very nice but Hermana Kaiser and I realized that we have pleasant talks with him but we never feel the Spirit. Every time we talk to him he asks us to question this religion that we have and it is always really painful and frustrating to try and explain something when he is so close to the truth. He committed to come to Church, but to spoil it, he bailed out before he got there. His talk really wore me out because it was Spiritless. We tried to make our 10th contact of the night and it turned out to be a less active from Sacramento who was picking up her daughter who just moved there and wanted to know where the Davis Chapel was! It was awesome!
.
Thursday we had a normal morning and went to check on one of our investigators that we didn't have time to visit earlier and it turned out that we taught her son, a former investigator. It was awesome! He asked all the right questions and we are excited for his potential. He is so ready and open and I really feel that we have all the answers that he needs. Because of still feeling weak from the talk before with Pedro and knowing that I needed to kick up a gear as a missionary in general I got a blessing from my District Leader. Oh, how I love the priesthood. It is awesome to feel it strengthen us! The nice thing was on the way home we felt prompted to visit this house and it turned out to be a pastor of another church who wanted to know why Mormons denied there is a Hell. I didn't feel prepared to answer his question but Sister Kaiser and I did the best we could. He told us of other Mormons who had left the Church because of this exact reason. It was quite an interesting talk.
.
The next morning [Friday] I had to answer the question for myself what our view of Hell was. I wasn't worried and I knew I would find the answer if I tried, so of course I did. It was an awesome study but a little exhausting. That is the beauty of this gospel. It is the truth because it always has an answer !. There is always a way to go. Then, we went to our 83 uear old, less active Yolando. She is wheelchair bound and so kind. We cleaned her windows for her and in return she made us flautas (tauqitos). She doesn't even cook for herself and she made them for us from her wheelchair. She is amazing and we love her! We had a lesson with Gabriel and Maria. The end of the lesson was really just him saying that all churches have errors and problems so I will come to your church, but it is equal with all the rest. He also works on Sundays, so he can't really come to church. We have decided to drop them as investigators or at least for a while. Both of our appointments didn't work today.  For the second one we brought one of the members of the YSA ward who is interning from BYU. Because our lesson had fallen through and she had helped us before we took her out to ice cream. It was a little weird to be out in downton Davis, a college town, on a Friday night and not proselyte, but it was good! I got nutella ice cream and it was really good too!
.
On Saturday we took Roberto from Thursday to a baptism. Our brand new investigator committed and actually came to a baptism. He had to be driven by a member.  He loved it. His family is Catholic and so he thought it would be a little sprinkiling of water. It was so wonderful to have him just feel the spirit of it all. He works on Sundays.  We see so much potential in him. Then we saw Ada Uribe. She was awesome.  She is opening up more and more to the gospel. We hope to just keep her moving forward. She said she will come to church but she didn't.  Thats ok, because I think she likes meeting with us and we just hope it goes higher and higher! We saw the Rodas who decided that they needed to go to the Flea market on Sunday instead of church, but we were glad to see them.
.
Needless to say no one came to church, but it was still a good Sunday. Can I just say that a Spanish branch is so different from an English Ward. The standard of conduct for the average member would appall some, but I love it and love them because they all sacrifice to come to church. For dinner we had Pizza from Little Caesars (another odd conduct of the branch), but we were grateful for it! We went to teach Wendy but she wasn't home so we taught her sister-in-law instead. She is a sweet teenager and we hope to see her desires grow in the gospel. We had another lesson fall through, but it was perfect because we got to go see Blance. She is this women that we met who wants to come to church. She had had a rough day and we were able to say a prayer with her and start our relationship on a more sure foundation.
.
All in all the Lord is here in Davis, as he is everywhere, but the crazy thing is that he works through me. At times that can be a lot of pressure but most of the time it gives me the opportunity to see the miracles unfold. Thank you for all of your prayers and support. I feel them everyday by my ability to do that work. I know that our loving Heavenly Father has a perfect plan for us. The central part of that Plan is Jesus Christ. He is our savior and also our brother. He works through prophets on the earth to lead and guide us to return back to him. He has also given us scriptures. We have the Book of Mormon to support the Bible and have answers to our questions so that when we return to the presence of God we will be prepared.
.
Continue with your faith because it is always enough and the Lord will help you along your way. Keep up the work of salvation in any way you can because it is all that matters in this life!
Have a great week! Nos Vemos!
.
Love

12 August 2013

Sister Cornwall, Sister Ellsworth and Sister Kaiser
 Hola,
This week brought a lot of new things here in the Woodland Stake. Out of 13 companionships (who are in one stake) only two remained the same after this transfer. One of those two was me and Sister Kaiser. Needless to say, there were a lot of new faces hanging around. It has been a fun week.  I need a to back track a little to last Monday.
.
Because of all the packing and cleaning that had to be done for those leaving we did not have soccer last week which was kind of bummer. It is a nice de-stresser from the week.  I got to finish all of my letters, so that was good. Early in the day we had a mini-party   Some of the Elders came over with Presidente Perez, our branch president, to work on our shower. Sister Kaiser has super sensitive skin so he came to install a filter. Then after the hours of p-day we had an FHE with the part-member Roda family and the family of the Branch President. It was fun and went really well. We talked about the gospel of Jesus Christ. The non-member dad was focused on his kids knowing what the five steps are to the celestial kingdom. We see so much potential in him and we are excited for what will come out of it.
.
On Tuesday we had our regular visit with Martin. This time we met in a park and it was interesting to see him try and figure this all out. The sweetest part was when we asked if he would be baptized when he knew it to be true and he said he didn't know because he likes music and dancing and he wasn't sure if those were allowed. We immediately told him that yes they were allowed and that it should just be something that doesn't distract us from the promptings of the Spirit. Then we had an FHE with Gabriel and Maria and their family. The nice thing was that we had a member of the Branch Presidency there and he was really able to connect with him, Latino to Latino.  He had a good talk with him about what was holding him back from baptism. That night we had a last supper as missionaries of the Branch. 3 out of the eight were leaving so needless to say it was a more somber goodbye after seeing each other everyday for 6 weeks. I know they will be awesome in their other areas in the Mission.  I am glad that I had the opportunity to learn and grow from and with them. We had a some fall-throughs so we went to meet a referral from someone in the Branch in Davis. She was so kind and it was amazing that by saying the members name, who they know, that they were immediately receptive and let us in. So again, don't forget to give referrals to your local missionaries.  It really makes all the difference. Anyway, the contacts name is Greys and she wasn't immediately interested in our message but we invited her to our daily dose English class.  W were excited. It was a little late and there was a sketchy man outside so we ran to our car to get home safe.  Some sprinklers were on by my side of the car and I got almost totally drenched, but I caught myself just in time.
.
Wednesday we had transfer day. There wasn't a real change for us except that we had a third companion for the day. In order to save miles and space, companions will stay behind in the area so that they can fit everything going out. We had Sister Lee with us. Sister Lee came out the same day as me into the field and I live with her. She is awesome and serves in the Davis YSA and young married wards. No she is not Asian. She definitely gets that a lot. She is a kind soul and I am so glad to have known her this part transfer. (One of the first things we did was facebook. On Wednesday we tried to seek some referrals from members in the branch in order to teach people on facebook.  We leave a spiritual thought on facebook as our status update and we found some friends. They are either investigators or members that we just want to be able to keep in contact with online.) The tender mercy of the day was contacting one of our referrals. It was actually from Sister Lee's mom.  The tender mercy was to have her there. They are a family here in Davis with a brother that is a member in Logan Utah. Sister Lee was able to converse with them and relate with them because she knows the member brother. We helped sister Lee teach one of her investigators in the Institute building near campus. His name is Nicolas and we taught him about keeping the Sabbath day holy. He was very interesting and fun and it was nice to not only to have  a lesson in English but a lesson with a young adult. We had to go get Sister Lee's new companion in Dixon, our neighboring city, and then to Woodland and then Esparto. Our daily total of miles for the day was 90 which is quite a lot. See the funny thing about the towns here are that inbetween each town are miles of fields. They just go on for a while and then you hit a new city.   So our area is big, but not because the number of people. We went to the Lopez home for dinner and we had tauqitos.  I guess that is the American name.  Mexicans call them flautas and they were soooooo good home made. One was with chicken and the other with potatoe. Also she puts crema on each indivdual one which also made them even better. On a side note I am usually in heaven with the food. Tortillas with every meal.   I love Mexican crema. It is way beter than sour creme.  Crema is just creme in Spanish.  It is just all so good.  I love it. The Lopez family defintely always has the best food, so it is always enjoyable to be at their home. (P.S. The crema from the bottle mom that you have gotten that is like a liquid is not the good stuff.  If you want to know more of what it is like let me know.) Our next activities were a little weird, but fun. The Branch was having a going away party for one of the missionaries departing. His name is Elder Vance. He served in the Branch for 6 months a year ago.  The crazy part was that he was 12 missionaries combined. Our whole spanish zone of missionaries consisted of him and his companion. Another tid-bit is that he has been one of the APs for the past 6 months.  So that is also interesting. He was an awesome missionary and it is weird to think of his ending when mine is just beginning. It was fun to converse with his parents and get to know them a little since most of the other people at the party spoke Spanish. Then we went to one of our regular complexes but no one was really interested.
.
Thursday we had very little success. No one was home, but all you can do is keep moving forward. The fun part of the day was in the evening during English class. Greys, our contact on Tuesday, came to English class. It was so funny to teach someone English from Spanish when I was doing it the other way around. It was awesome and very fun to have our own potential investigator there. The other cool thing was that there were 8 missionaries there. As I have said, there are a lot of Asians here.  Because of that we got Elder Chan, a young man from Hong Kong who speaks Mandarin and Cantonese. He is very nice.  Because of that we just got a whole new companionship in Davis. Last transfer there were six missionaries here in Davis and now there are 8. We were all at Enlgish class this last week and it was just really fun to have all of this Davis missionary fire in 1 room. I am excited to get even more Spanish speakers to English class to be able to find people to teach. Greys said that she would also bring a neighbor next week. We are excited for what potential that gives us. Also English class is just really fun. The teacher, called from the ward, teaches a little lesson and then they split into small groups with the helper and missionaries that are there,  We help them to practice. It is really an amazing thing to teach them this language especially when I understand their pain.
.
Friday morning we had a little car scrape with someone in our parking lot which was a bummer but it happens. We left our information on the car and waited for them to contact us. They called us that night.  The weird part was that they had a 626 area code  This scared me for a moment but then it wasn't anyone that I knew. Turns out they were visiting family in the complex and they live in Covina and he works at JPL. It was a weird happenstance but it was funny for them to say towns like Gendora and Covina that are so familiar to me. We had our Zone meeting with all the new people. We got a new Zone Leader and a new Sister Training Leader. Our focus was on members being part of the work and also how goals to have more baptisms and people at church. It was really good!. We went to visit someone we hadn't seen in a month because she had been with her sick father in Mexico. We had only taught her 1 lesson before she left, so we were starting to get worried about her progressing after a month. It turns out that her father died so we taught her the Plan of Salvation.  It touched her deeply. We also committed her to a baptismal date on the 31st of this month.  We will see what happens. We had a lesson with a single man here in Davis.  With the rules we have, we couldn't go in without another sister so we borrowed a member from the YSA ward and she was awesome. She is from Mexico and not only was it nice to have a native speaker but also her testimony of Joseph Smith was very powerful.  We were so glad to have her there with us. We are so, So excited to see were he, Moises, leads to. He has a lot of potential. so we will see.
.
Saturday we had a pretty good day. (Started out after studies with facebook. I accepted and looked for friends to start. Then I went through some of the current status updates to like and show support for those things that are good and wholesome. Then I posted a spiritual thought with the song I Believe in Christ and sent a message to a girl we had contacted. We just randomly met her on one of our days and asked her if she had a facebook and if we could friend her to share spiritual thoughts.  We did and we will see how that goes. Facebook has so much potential but I don't really know what to do with it, yet.) We had some more people fall through on lessons, but there is always something else to do, so you just do it.
All in all the work is hard but good, and I know there will be big and eternal rewards for these people in the future.
Included is a picture of my planner. The popular thing to do is to cover it with pictures so I did and my focus was Christ. It is nice to be constantly reminded of him as I use it. Another random fact is that I do play piano quite often. Sometimes I am a little shakey but it is fun to use that talent that I have been given from our Heavenly Father to benefit others. So thanks mom for the lessons.
I love you all and I know that the lord will bless you with what you need in life as long as you are doing your part. Have a good week!
Love ya,
Hermana Cornwall

Missionary Facebook Photo
Hola,
So I am Staying in Davis. I know you were all worried, but now you know where I will be for the next 6 weeks. There is now a bit of change in my zone and just in the area in general. Almost half of the missionaries are leaving. Hermana Kaiser and I are staying put. It would have been fun to have a little change but I am excited to see what happens in the next six weeks here in Davis. On Monday we didn't have anything too exciting, but we did get 12 contacts which was nice.
.
Tuesday we had our district meeting and we bore our testimonies on the 12 contacts.  It was fun to share the joy and blessings we have felt when we do the 10 contacts. It isn't just that there are awesome blessings, but if you meet 10 people a day then you at least  find one that has a high potential of being a potential investigator. It is awesome and it has also made us just a little bit busier. We had a lesson with one of our 10 contacts. His name is Martin. He has a basic belief in God and isn't attached to a religion.  It just makes it a lot easier to really build him up for the first time.  I had my first "Church Tour" EVER! It was really good.  I also think it was really effective. We did one with Gabriel and Maria - a long time investigator family. They loved the Church Tour,  We really felt the spirit. We hope that this will help them to come to church soon. We had a lesson with Audelia. She is an older women whose mother lives with her and we teach them both. They are very sweet and kind and she gave us corn on the cob.  We hope to seem them start progressing soon because we don't see it yet. We finally got the 10-3-1. - we actually got 11-3-3. It was such a great feeling, but it was exhausting. It makes for a really full day. It also means a lot of paper work,  Needless to say, I was happy to plop into bed.
.
Wednesday we had an average day. (First we went on facebook and didn't do too much.. I still really don't know how it will be effective.  I know that it will come with time and when I settle in. It sounds like we are having even more training upcoming this week.  I am excited to see where it all  leads!) The cool thing that we did was to take a Preach My Gospel survey to assess how well we are using it. It is for an upcoming speaker we will have in September. I felt like I am using it pretty well.  W we will see what he will teach us in a few months. We did some follow-up on some of our previous contacts. Because we meet so many people it is hard to find to them time to go back and see them again.  This isn't a bad thing but it keeps us busy. We had a our coordination meeting. Instead of muffins we had home grown tomatoes with onions and balsamic vineagar on pita chips. Needless to say, it felt a little homey and it tasted so good. Don't get me wrong, I love the Mexican food but I don't mind getting a few extra vegetables here or there.  I started my first exchange. Now I call it my first exchange because it was the first time I was paired up with the Sister Training Leader.
.
It was an awesome exchange because it was an opportunity for me to learn from an older and wiser missionary.  The scary part was that we were in Davis and she doesn't speak Spanish. For the lesson we had, it was taught by only me. It was kind of nice to have my Spanish be tested. Usually I can just defer to my companion or at least have a break to think. It was a fun day and I learned and grew in confidence a lot. We had a blitz in Winters (yes, this is a name of a town). A blitz is when all the missionaries in the zone go to one area and contact. This one had a special purpose because the church building there was renovated and so we were inviting people to an open house that they were having. It was really fun to see peoples faces when we weren't there to give them religion but to personally invite them to come see what our church is about and have light refreshments. I haven't heard how it went but I hope it went well. The set-up they had was gorgeous and the renovations were nice but I think pretty minimal.
.
On Friday we had a lot of csnceled lessons which was a bummer.  It is just part of the work. We got to have a good weekly planning session and fun dinner with the missionaries at the church. Then we had a nice chat with one of the less actives in Davis.  And we got our 11 contacts. The crazy part about the day was finding out about transfers. The zone leaders call you to tell you where you are going. It is super intense to just hear that you will be moving in a few days or getting a new companion or just to hear who else is coming and going but I survived it without any change.
.
Then Saturday we had a nice chat with Yolanda, the less active that we found and then we went to an appointment that fell through.  Then we saw Martin again, so that was good. Our other planned lesson fell through. We got to continue our planning from the day before so it all worked out. We had a nice dinner with Celia and had a pretty simple night of finishing our planning.  (The funny thing about facebook is that we have to put it in as part of our weekly planning and set goals of what we want to accomplish.  We hope to accomplish them soon).
.
On Sunday we had our regular meetings.  The missionaries that are leaving from the branch bore their testimony which was a little sad.  We are excited for them to continue the work wherever they will be. We had our Hour Of Prayer. It has become my new favorite thing. It is really a pleasant experience.  We had our night of studies because we didn't have time earlier in the day.
.
So my first 12 weeks on a mission have been wonderful! I love being a missionary even though it is really hard most of the time. I thought of a few things that I have seen my six weeks here in Davis. Number one - it is a bike town. I have heard that I haven't seen anything yet because school isn't in full swing.  We will see. It is such a bike town that they have the crosswalk buttons for bikers to make sure that the light changes for them. They are cool and seemingly useful. Number two - the Sprouts [grocery store] equivalent here is Nugget Market. I have grown to love it and it has become my grocery store of choice. Number three - There are a lot of Asians here. Which is awesome! We have so many that we are getting a Mandarin speaking greenie here this next week! We are excited to see what happens with the work.
.
Well I love you all. I know your lives are exciting and wonderful and I am so grateful that I get to share a lot of what happens in mine every week. So here is to another transfer in the mission, even here in Davis!
Love ya,
Hermana Cornwall
